Most parents ask the same two questions before booking a first class: is my child old enough? and which style should they start with? There is no single right answer, but there is a sensible order. Here is how we think about it at D Planet, where kids’ batches start from three years old.

Ages 3–5: rhythm, play and listening

At this age dance class is really about moving to music, following simple instructions and getting comfortable in a group. Short routines, clapping games and copying the teacher build rhythm and coordination without any pressure to “get it right”.

  • What to look for: short, lively sessions, lots of repetition and a teacher who keeps every child involved.
  • Good first styles: Bollywood and simple folk steps — the music is familiar and the moves are expressive.

Ages 6–9: learning real steps

Children now remember sequences, count beats and enjoy learning a full routine. This is the age where technique starts to matter: posture, clean footwork and moving on the beat. A child who has a routine to perform at a school function or an annual show usually practises with far more enthusiasm.

  • Good styles: Bollywood, Western and Jazz for sharp, energetic choreography; Bhangra for stamina and joy.
  • Watch for: a class that breaks steps down count by count, so no child is left copying blindly from the back row.

Ages 10–12: style and confidence

Pre-teens start to have opinions about the music and style they like. Let them choose. Children who pick their own style tend to stick with it. Many move towards hip-hop or contemporary, where expression and personal style count as much as the steps.

Teens: crews, freestyle and performance

For teenagers, dance becomes social as well as physical. Crew work, freestyle sessions and preparing for stage shows and competitions give them goals to work towards and a group to belong to — and a healthy break from screens and study.

How often should a child attend?

Consistency matters more than intensity. Two or three classes a week is enough for steady progress at most ages; for very young children, one or two is plenty. More important than the number is that your child comes out of class tired, happy and keen to go back.

Five signs you have found the right class

  1. Your child can explain, in their own words, what they learned today.
  2. The teacher corrects gently and specifically — not just “do it again”.
  3. The batch is grouped by age and level, so no one is lost or bored.
  4. There is something to work towards: a routine, a show or a new style.
  5. You are welcome to see a class before paying for anything.

Try before you commit

Every new student at D Planet can take one free trial class, at either our Pitampura (Saraswati Vihar) or Rohini (Sector 11) branch. Bring your child, watch the batch and decide afterwards. Batch timings depend on age group and level, so check the batches page or call either branch and we will suggest the right one.
