The best workout is the one you keep doing. That is why dance workouts are so popular: the music carries you, the hour passes quickly and you leave having sweated without counting reps. But “dance fitness” covers several quite different classes. Here is how they compare.
Zumba
Zumba is a dance-fitness party set to Latin and international rhythms. The moves are simple and repeated, and songs alternate between fast and slower tempos so you work hard, then recover.
Choose it if you get bored in a gym, you like upbeat music and you want a class where nobody minds if you miss a step.
Aerobics
Aerobics is classic rhythmic cardio: step patterns performed to music, built into combinations, followed by toning and a cool-down stretch. It is more structured than Zumba, which makes progress easy to feel week to week.
Choose it if you are starting a fitness routine and like knowing exactly what comes next.
Bhangra Fit
Bhangra Fit takes Punjab’s big, bouncy harvest-dance moves — raised arms, shoulder shrugs, jumps — and runs them as intervals to the dhol. It is one of the most energetic classes you can take.
Choose it if you want a high-energy workout with a Punjabi soundtrack (and a head start for the next wedding).
Bollyfit
Bollyfit uses easy Bollywood steps set to hit film songs, arranged as a cardio session with toning in between.
Choose it if you are a Bollywood fan who wants to get fit without it feeling like exercise.
Dance Cardio
Dance cardio strings short, repeatable dance combinations together at a high tempo, with breaks to recover. It sits between a dance class and a workout.
Choose it if you want the fun of learning choreography with the sweat of a cardio class.

| Dance Cardio | Mixed | Short combinations at pace | Learning moves while sweating |
What about weight loss?
Any of these classes can be part of a weight-loss plan, because they keep your heart rate up for most of the hour. What makes the difference is regularity, sleep and food — not which class you pick. If you want a plan to follow, our weight-loss programmes pair dance cardio with strength work, built up week by week. If you have a medical condition or have been inactive for a long time, check with your doctor before starting.
