As we know the government has cut GST rates on more items including refrigerators, washing machines and televisions up to 26 inches. It’s a great move by the government, but we are surprised by the televisions rates and I feel like the rates should be revised to 18% because it is a necessary product. My question is that if refrigerator and washing machine both have been included under the 18% bracket, why not television beyond 32 inches because in today’s day and age, television is for the masses and government could have expanded the horizon till 50 inches as both 32 and 40 inches are the highest selling SKUs in India. Currently in India there are 197millions TV used at home and the penetration rate of television for both 32&40 inches is much higher than that for fully automatic washing machine and double door refrigerator, which cleary states that television is not a luxury product anymore. There will be an increase of 15-20% of the panels in the month of august in that case it will be a real boost if the GST rates are cut down to 18% otherwise it will affect the consumers pocket in the upcoming festive season.
